THE BALL – Gilles Vicente beats Sporting in Alcosete and reinforces leadership (Taça Revelação)

In a meeting between the two leaders in the qualifying phase for the Revelation Cup, Gilles Vicente went to Alcocete to beat Sporting (2-1) and strengthen, in this way, the first place in the ranking.

It was played for the leadership of the qualifying phase for the Revelation Cup between the teams occupying the two qualification places: Sporting, in second place, welcomed the leading and still unbeaten Gil Vicente.

Calmed by their excellent start to the phase, Barceló’s side came in without pressure and even scored after 3 minutes, but Miro was offside and his shot was disallowed, keeping the score at nil.

Sporting then took the initiative in the match, but could not create dangerous situations, thanks to the impeccable positioning of the opponents, who defended in two lines of four very firmly.

While the lions were slow to overcome the gilistas barrier, they once again had Miro at the forefront of the attacking action, with a shot almost by chance near the end line hitting the opposite post in the 33rd minute.

The return for the second half brought a much more dynamic Lion, having three good chances to end in the first quarter of an hour, two of them from André Gonçalves, in the 54th and 58th minutes. In the first instance, the winger had only the goalkeeper in front of him, but lost his balance when he shot and shot wide. in the second he bent from the right to the center and shot hard, but the ball hit the right post.

Sporting weren’t done and lurking was the cynical Gil, who in the 59th minute managed to open the scoring through the inevitable Miro, who headed higher than Sporting’s centre-backs to match the center on the left.

The advantage gave confidence to the Minho side, who, with a game at a slower pace, scored again in the 76th minute, Cláudio Araújo’s back-touch inside the area for Eric Ayiah’s attack.

Faced with a tough handicap to cancel with just minutes to play, Joao Pereira brought on Lucas Dias and he set the green and white football ablaze, taking a penalty and taking charge in the 84th minute. Not satisfied, the Canadian hit a free-kick just in time for David Moreira to finish, but he was offside and therefore could not avoid defeat at home to an even more dominant Gilles Vicente.

Barcelos’ side now have 25 points while Sporting hold 19 and are at the mercy of second-placed Farense, who have 17 points and travel to Rio Ave stronghold in a week’s time.
