HeyIndie Deschamps, French coach, gave an extensive interview to the newspaper this Saturday Le Figaroin which he analyzed, among other things, the soap opera surrounding Karim Benzema, a striker who missed last year’s World Cup due to injury.
The Real Madrid forward, who was called up by Deschamps for the tournament, arrived in Qatar injured and ended up returning to the club four days before his debut in the competition. A situation that surprised the selector.
“They insult us when they say that. There is only one truth and Karim knows it well. Karim joined on November 14 after a period of semi-inactivity at club level. An individualized program followed, his return to club training postponed. I wasn’t 100 percent sure I could start the first game against Australia,” the French coach began.
“When Karim was injured, our doctor took him to the Aspetar clinic for an MRI. Karim forwarded the results to his doctor in Madrid, who also gave his opinion. When he returned to the hotel, it was past midnight. I found Karim at his room with our doctor who had come to give me the MRI report,” he emphasized.
“Karim is upset because this World Cup meant a lot to him. He told me he was dead. At best, his return to training could not happen before December 10. In a statement on social media, he expressed his disappointment that he had to leave, but he justifies this choice by his involvement with the team. We were together for about twenty minutes. When I left him, I said: “Karim, there is no rush. team manager. When I wake up, I realize he’s gone. It’s his decision, he won’t say otherwise, I understand and respect him,” Deschamps shot.
The French coach also spoke about the position taken by Karim Benzema, who decided to end his international career after the World Cup.
“I called him after my contract renewal. We had a long conversation. I got him more recently to find out about his predisposition for the next teams and he confirmed his decision to end his international career. Don’t ask me about his arguments. I will it is up to him to communicate them or not,” he concluded.
